Extensions and Lash Health

We apply one extension per natural lash - once in awhile we will apply 2 thinner or shorter extensions to one natural lash if it's appropriate.  Flares, 3D, 4D and 5D lashes have gained popularity, however, be aware that this increases the probability of your natural lashes getting stuck together and if one lash is growing and the other lash is not, it could pull out your lash.  There is also a weight tolerance to your own natural lashes.  If your stylist chooses extensions that are too long, too thick or too many, your lashes may cry uncle.  Your lash health is important to us, we want to save those lash follicles at all costs.  A lash that falls out or is pulled out prematurely doesn't mean the lash won't grow back, but it reduces the chance.  Don't forget it takes approximately 4-8 weeks to grow an eyelash to a viable stage of adding an extension and your fills are how many weeks apart?  You can do the math.

Are lash extensions addictive?

Technically no. However, you may kinda sorta fall in love with your reflection. So you may develop an addiction to looking in the mirror. However, the extensions themselves do not contain additives that are addictive.

Getting a "fill"

It only takes about an hour to do a fill if they are in decent shape. How soon you need a fill is up to your natural lash growth and how you treat them. Most of our fills are between 3-4 weeks. If you are going to another lash salon and it's anything less than 3 weeks, it's likely the glue or the technique or your choice - we have those clients too who never want to see them less than full and awesome.

What should I do to prepare for my appointment?

Try to arrive without any eye makeup but mascara on the lower lashes is fine and do not curl your lashes that day, you may also want to wear your hair down so it will not bother you laying on it for 60-120 minutes.

Who can get lash extensions?

Anyone!  But you must have some lashes there to adhere the extensions.  I highly recommend Babe Lash for the lash challenged.  They can be challenging for eye-rubbers.  High humidity or constant exposure to salt water may cause the glue bond to weaken faster than normal.

How should I care for my lashes?

For the first 24 hours: Avoid showering, steam rooms, massages and facials after lash application. Do not wet the lashes and absolutely no crying!

Day to Day Care:

Use a pointed cotton swab or micro brush and oil-free makeup remover to keep your eyes clean.  Cleanse lashes with baby shampoo or any gentle cleanser that is tear-free.

Avoid facing the shower. They’re waterproof, but not jet-spray-in-your-face-proof. Use a headband when you’re hitting the gym or working up a sweat. Not only is it oh-so-trendy, but it also prevents sweat from dripping into your eyes.

Avoid wearing mascara - dirt and grime can disintegrate the glue and many eyeliners are oil-based. This isn't to say DON'T, but keeping the lashes and lash line free of oil and dirt will definitely add to their longevity. I recommend using  liquid eyeliner that is easy to remove.

How long will my lashes last?

Everyone is different, but most people come back for a fill between 3-4 weeks.

I just had my lashes applied and a few fell off already, is something wrong?

During the application, we can't tell which ones are at the beginning or end of their resting phase growth cycle. If we happen to apply it onto an eyelash that's near its demise (so to speak) then sadly we are unable to resuscitate that poor lash.

Will having lash extensions cause my natural lashes to fall out?

The application of lash extensions will not cause eyelashes to fall out IF your stylist is choosing the correct extensions for your lashes.  Some people have very fragile lashes, short lashes, wispy lashes, long lashes, strong lashes - you get the picture.  If a stylist puts on a very thick and heavy extension on a lash that is not appropriate, then yes, it can cause premature shedding of the lash.  At Instyle Lashes we have several different thicknesses, several different curls and lengths from 6-16 mm.  There is a huge difference in sizes of extensions that should be put on your lashes.  They should be custom fit for you and your natural lash line.

Also, if you pull them out, well, then... you've pulled them out! Remember that your natural lashes have their own life cycle of falling out and growing - like the hair found elsewhere on your body. It's just hard to notice small lashes falling out, but when attached to a thicker, longer lash it's hard not to notice! Be aware it can take over 8 weeks to grow a natural lash.  Do Not Pull On Them!!

And of course, once the extensions are removed, your own eyes may appear smaller, your natural lashes, shorter and sparser because you've been accustomed to a full set of longer, thicker lashes! Some use extensions for special occasions, others are addicts for life - use at your discretion.

**There is a small chance, around 2-3%,  to have an allergic reaction to the cyanoacrylate that is in all eyelash extension adhesives.  This can happen with your first full set or you could have fills for years and then suddenly, your eyes, say no more!  If this happens to you, well, darn it!  Things to do if this happens to you - take a benadryl and use cool compresses - this will help reduce any redness and swelling.  Text the main number and let me know.  I have been trying out different creams that have been having some success combatting the red and flaky skin that often comes with an allergic reaction - we can see if this remedy is a possibility for you.  We strongly suggest if you are a bride or you have a special event, to try them out at least a week before.  The majority of allergic reactions will happen within the first 3 days and then disappear within the next three days.  It is not necessary to have them removed because the allergic reaction has already occurred and most reactions are slight, however if you want them removed, it takes less than an hour to remove them.
